Vibe Coding vs Agentic Coding vs Software Engineering: What's the Difference?

The topic

The terms get used as if they mean the same thing. They don't, and the difference matters when you decide how to build something other people will rely on. Search for them side by side and you'll find a lot of heat. This piece cuts through it.

The short answer

Vibe coding means describing what you want and accepting what the AI gives you, with little attention to the code. Agentic coding means an AI agent plans and carries out a multi-step job itself (editing several files, running tests, fixing its own errors) while a person supervises. Software engineering is the whole discipline: design, testing, security, maintenance and accountability, with or without AI. They are different amounts of human attention, not rival camps.

The longer answer

Vibe coding: you steer by feel

You say what you want, run it, say what's wrong, repeat. You judge by whether it works, not by reading the code. It's brilliant for prototypes, personal tools and learning. It is a risky basis for anything that holds other people's money or data.

Agentic coding: the AI does the legwork

An agent is given a goal and works through it: reading your project, making changes across files, running checks, trying again. You review what it did. The gain is speed on bigger jobs. The risk is that an agent with wide permissions can do wide damage, so what it's allowed to touch matters.

Software engineering: accountability for the result

An engineer, using AI or not, is responsible for the system working, staying secure and being fixable by someone else. That means tests, reviews, backups, monitoring and written decisions. AI is now a very good assistant to that job. It doesn't replace the responsibility.

Which one should you use?

Match the approach to the stakes. A tool only you use: vibe away. Something customers pay for: use agents to move fast, then add the engineering habits (review, tests, backups). Anything holding regulated or sensitive data: bring in real engineering discipline from the start.

Most real projects slide along this scale as they grow. The mistake is staying at the vibe end after other people begin to depend on the thing.
