The topic
"Production" is the word developers use for the real, live version that customers use. Plenty of vibe-coded apps run perfectly in a demo and fall over the week real people touch them. That gap, between "it works" and "it's ready", is where most of the pain lives.
The short answer
An app is production ready when it stays up under real use, you'll know when it breaks, you can restore your data, it's secure enough for what it holds, someone can fix it, and customers have a way to get help. If you can't tick those six, it's still a prototype, however good it looks.
The longer answer
1. It stays up
Real hosting, not your own computer. Think about what happens with ten users at once, or a hundred. A page that loads in a second for you may time out for them.
2. You'll know when it breaks
Monitoring means getting an alert when something fails, before a customer emails you. Even a free uptime check is a start, plus a place where errors are recorded.
3. You can restore the data
Automatic backups that you've tested restoring from. Our guide on AI tools and databases explains why.
4. It's secure enough for its job
An app holding only public information has a different bar from one holding personal data or payments. Run our security checklist, and keep keys private.
5. Someone can fix it
If the only description of how it works is a chat history, that is a risk. Keep notes, keep code in version control, and know who you'd call if you were away for a week.
6. Customers can get help
An email address that someone answers is the minimum. Decide how fast you'll respond and say so.
Also: the legal and money basics
Terms, a privacy policy, a way to take payment properly, and clarity on who owns what. None is hard; all are easy to forget.
How long does this take?
For a small app, a few focused days. Hiring help for the parts you'd rather not do is perfectly sensible.
