My Vibe-Coded App Is Broken. Should I Fix It Myself or Get Help?

The topic

It worked yesterday. Today something is broken, the AI has "fixed" it four times, and each fix has broken something else. This is one of the most common moments in vibe coding, and a good moment to step back before you lose another evening.

The short answer

Keep fixing it yourself while the problem is small, the cause is findable, and the stakes are low. Get human help when the AI is going in circles, when real customers or their data are affected, or when you can't tell what the code does any more. A fresh developer can often fix in an hour what a chat loop hasn't fixed in a week.

The longer answer

Try these first, in this order

  1. Go back to the last working version. If your project is in version control, return to the last point where it worked, then redo changes one at a time. This alone solves many problems.
  2. Describe the symptom, not the fix. Tell the AI exactly what you did, what you expected and what happened, and paste the error message. Don't ask it to "fix it".
  3. Ask for the cause before the change. "What do you think is wrong, and how could we confirm it?" beats an instant rewrite.
  4. Change one thing at a time and test after each.
  5. Start a fresh chat with a short summary. Long conversations lose the thread.

Signs you need a human

  • The AI repeats itself or undoes its own fixes.
  • Each fix breaks something new.
  • Customer data, payments or logins are affected.
  • You don't understand what the code does and nobody else does either.
  • The problem is the setup (hosting, domain, database), not the code.

What a good helper does

They read before they change. They ask what "working" means. They explain what they found in plain English and leave notes. They don't rewrite everything unless it's the right call and they tell you why.

Finding one without being overcharged

Ask for a short, fixed-scope first look rather than an open-ended engagement. Describe the symptom and share what you tried. Agree what you'll get at the end: a fix, a written explanation, or both. Be wary of anyone who insists on rebuilding from scratch before they've looked.

Prevent the next one

Keep notes on how your app works, use version control, and take a snapshot before every large change. The easiest repair is the one you can undo.
